  • Tips for Hosting a Game Day Party

Even though the holidays are over, there’s no reason you can’t still enjoy a party. In fact, if you have football fans (or any sport fans) in your home, these tips for hosting a game day party will help you make sure a good time is had by all. However, be careful, once you know how to throw a great game day party, you may have friends and family inviting themselves over more often!

    • No one wants to watch the big game standing up, so make sure you have plenty of seating space. Having enough seats may mean you have to limit the number of people at your party or you may want to borrow chairs if you don’t have enough seats for everyone. Of course, you’ll want to allow the adults to sit on couches and chairs, but you can put large comfortable cushions on the floor for the children.
    • Plan ahead when it comes to food. Don’t wait until the day of the game to decide what snacks you’ll have available. Make a list of the items you want to serve so you can see how much it could cost. If you think it will be too expensive, don’t be afraid to ask friends and family to bring a finger food as their cost of “admission” to your party.
    • Make as much food ahead of time as you can. Doing this will help you to be sure you have everything you need as well as not have to cook or prepare the day of the party. Who knows, you may even be able to enjoy yourself because you don’t have to fret about preparing the food.
    • Set up the party so the food is easy to find and easy to reach. No one wants to have an empty plate or glass and have to go into the other room to get a refill. They might miss something important. Set up a cooler with drinks and food table in the same room so guests won’t have to leave.
    • If you plan on grilling for the party, be sure that you get that done in plenty of time before the game starts. While it might be okay to grill while watching the game in a tailgate party, having one in your home means you’ll want to have everything done ahead of time so you can enjoy the game, too.
    • Consider options besides alcoholic beverages. You may want to allow friends or family to bring their own drinks, but you may also want to forgo having them at all. Remember, if the party is at your house, you can decide whether or not they are served. Lemonade, soft drinks, punch and non-alcoholic choices will most likely be fine and you won’t have to worry about friends drinking and driving after the game.
    • Don’t be a martyr. Even though it is nice to have ‘real’ plates and glasses, your guests won’t mind if you use paper. Using disposables will make clean-up a breeze and you won’t have to spend hours washing all the dishes.
  • Making Gourmet Appetizers on a Budget

Throwing a party can be a lot of fun, but it can also be expensive. If you’re considering having a party sometime soon, you may be trying to think of ways to save money. Consider making gourmet appetizers on a budget to help keep your food budget down.

    • Stuffed mushrooms are considered a gourmet appetizer. These are prepared by removing the stems and then stuffing the caps with any assortment of items. You can use the stems, chopped finely, along with other items. Bread crumbs, herbs, crabmeat, creamed spinach and baby shrimp are common ingredients you might find in Stuffed Mushrooms. However, you can use whatever ingredients your family enjoys when making these appetizers. Look in magazines, cookbooks, on the internet or television programs to find recipes.
    • Deviled eggs are a common appetizer for family reunions and any other gathering. However they don’t seem very “gourmet,” do they? There are ways you can dress them up to make them more so. Be sure refrigerate these and take out just before needed.
      • Rather than top deviled eggs with paprika, use 1/8 teaspoon of black or red caviar to garnish them. Alternate the red and black on the serving platter.
      • Mince crabmeat or shrimp and black or green olives when making the filling and then pipe it into the egg halves.
      • Minced red and green pepper can also be added to deviled eggs to dress them up.
    • Cheese marbles instead of cheese balls. Many people make or purchase cheese balls because they can be made with many different ingredients. Make Pecan and Goat-Cheese Marbles using soft goat cheese rather than cream cheese. Add minced rosemary and crushed and chopped coriander seeds. Toast and finely chop pecans which will be used to roll the cheese marbles in prior to placing them on the serving platter. Chill these prior to service.
    • Crostini is another gourmet appetizer that can be made. You can serve it with cheese, dips and vegetables. Cut either French or Italian bread diagonally into one inch slices. Place the slices on a baking sheet, brush them with olive oil and rub with garlic. Bake these until light browned in a 350 degree oven. If you want to serve a sweet crostini, spread flavored cream cheese on the bread after it comes out of the oven and then provide minced fruit or jellies.

As you can tell, you don’t have to spend a ton of money to make gourmet appetizers on a budget. You can use one or two ingredients that are more expensive and add them to appetizers you might normally prepare.

  • Make Ahead Appetizers

Whether it’s game day, holiday parties or family get-togethers its best to try to prepare food in advance. If you are hosting a party, making food ahead of the event allows you to be more relaxed and enjoy yourself. Bake them in a 375 degree oven for 12-15 minutes. If you plan to prepare ahead, place each appetizer on a baking sheet and freeze. When frozen, place them in a zip top bag and put them back in the freezer. The pastry would be placed on the baking sheet seam down to bake them.
    • Corn Salsa with Blue Corn Chips adds a colorful splash to your party table. This salsa can be made with fresh, frozen or canned corn. Add chopped tomato, minced jalapeno, chopped red onion, minced cilantro, minced garlic, lime juice and olive oil. The flavors become more intense the longer they are stored, up to three days in advance.
    • Spiced nuts are a great make ahead appetizer. Using your favorite nuts, you can make them savory, spicy or sweet depending upon the seasonings you use.

There are so many places to find good recipes for make-ahead appetizers. Television cooking shows often demonstrate how to make appetizers as well as cookbooks, cooking blogs and magazines being easy to access.
